Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo | Korean Drama Review

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo Review

Scarlet Heart Ryeo is one of the best Historical Korean drama I have ever seen. This drama is just so good. For me, the story and so many good-looking men in one single drama was the main reason to watch it.

The drama starts with a girl named Hae Soo (IU) who travels back in time and finds herself in the royal household of the Goryeo Era. The royal family has seven young princes each unique in personality and nature. There she falls in love with her brother-in-law and the 8th prince Wang Wook, who share the same feelings for her.  Later she gets the love and attention of 4th Prince Wang So(Lee Joon-gi) who is known to be brutal and scary. She knows the future and wants to change it for the sake of love. She wants Wang So to be a kind king not to be a bloody monarch. She falls in love with him and their story begins.

The story is not simple as we think. When we think about a royal palace, a King, a Queen, Princes, Princess, Glam, and Glory are the things that come to our mind. But there is much more to it than just that. The drama portrays another side, which is politics, sibling rivalry, war, blood, and death.

Life in a palace is not easy as we think. The drama shows another side of royalty and had succeeded  in portraying it.

Scarlet Heart Ryeo stars Lee Joon-gi (Wang So) and IU (Hae Soo) as lead characters. They did a wonderful job in this drama. I loved their chemistry, SoSoo couple were super cute with each other.

Wang So played by Lee Joon-gi did an amazing job portraying a brutal and scary prince. We can see his character goes through a lot of variation in the drama. As he falls in love with Hae Soo, you see a change in his character. He is a misunderstood character in the drama that you truly want to help him out.

He has a scar on his face which causes other people to treat him differently. There Hae Soo helps him to hide his scar with her magic hand. But still somewhere you see love for the family and especially for his mother. Wang So is a perfect and ideal person who hides under the grab of evil. He is a ruthless man who tries to protect himself and his people. He is shown as little aggressive but yet loving. Even with half of his face hidden by mask, he conveyed the feelings so effectively.

Coming to the character of Hae Soo played by IU, the drama mostly focused on her character. But sadly she was the weakest in the show. Hae Soo is a complicated character and goes through a lot of emotions in the story. For such a lead role it was important to convey her emotions and her feelings, but she failed to convey those emotions.

All the characters had equal importance in the story and the story building. I cannot talk about each and every character but I will talk about my favorite ones in the drama.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo Review

First one Wang Eun played by Baekhyun, his character was so cute and funny. Amongst the princes, he is the most funniest and cheerful prince. He is not a strong prince but towards the end we can see how strong he become.

Second one Baek Ha the 13th prince, I liked him a lot from the beginning. He was the most practical and relatable character amongst the princes. Third one is 14th prince Wang Jung, his character was really strong from the beginning itself, but you can see his change from a teenager to a fully grown man. You witness this drastic change him as the story goes ahead. Loved him a lot.

All the characters had really good character development. You can see each and every character has a growth by each episode, which is a plus point for the drama. In 20 episodes, you get know each and every characters really well.

The drama is beautifully shot and it feel like we are present right there when things are happening. It did z  really good job in balancing things out in the drama, story wise. There are instances where things go down and then there is a calm period, and then again things get worse. The political part was really interesting as well. Usually I get bored when politics involved but this drama has some interesting politics which kept me far away from boredom.

OST: "Say Yes" by (Loco, Punch) is my favorite song in the album. "A Lot Like Love" by Baek A Yeon also made the mood of drama interesting. These songs are that much addictive if you don't know Korean. The OST's of this show is my favorite till date.

Scarlet Heart Ryeo is an intense story. It has romance, politics and drama. If you are a fan of such a genre then give it a try. Hope you enjoy!!
